July 18 - Rockville Twilighter

AM: 3+ miles easy

PM: 8k road race, 26:38, 29th place, 11 miles

Ugh, not much to talk about here. For whatever reason, I didn't have it today, starting from the word "go." My legs just felt like they were moving faster than I was running.

It's frustrating because I haven't ever run well at this race. It's managed to chew me up and spit me out every single year, and I have yet to figure out why.

Tonight was pretty much the same story as every year: I went out slower than I felt I was running, ran an awful 4th mile, ran a faster but painful last mile.

Again, like last year and the year before, my stomach waged war on the rest of my body afterward. I thought I had that figured out after a positive experience at Peachtree, but no such luck.

Time to get up, dust myself off, and get running again. I know I'm in better shape than this indicates.

There are some races that are just impossible to "get right". Look at Lance Armstrong. Has never won atop Mont Ventoux. Won atop every other major climb in France, not Ventoux. Just can't do it. Don't put any stock in this one performance, don't even waste time trying to figure out why it hasn't gone according to plan.

Fleg was back in town? Is he back for good or just for a little bit?

PR -

I think you're in 25:40 shape.

Peachtree 2007 - 33:47
Rockville 2007 - 26:37

Peachtree 2008 - 33:51
Rockville 2008 - 26:47

Peachtree 2009 - 32:50
Rockville 2009 - 26:38

I also thought I was in 25:40 shape, as the above suggests. Both races had good weather this year. Both races had awful weather in 2007 and 2008. So you can understand why Rockville was disappointing.

I'm still perfectly content to dismiss it as just a bad day. I feel like I'm in better shape than yesterday, though I have yet to figure out why it didn't go well.

Also, RM, I'm pretty sure Fleg was just in town for a week or so. He's still living the good life out in Hollywood.
